Close to 150 members took to the course, but none were better than BJ.

The course was very wet after the week’s heavy rain so winter rules were still in vogue. That makes the game much easier but the level of scoring was still incredible.

No less than 23 players scored 40 points or better.

Rory Madeley (5) had 44 points and his gross 66 was the best gross score of the day. What a player!

John Russell (10) went round in 71 gross and that gave him 44 points. John won the low section.

Colin McDonald (16) had a near perfect round, with no double bogeys. He too had 44 points and he was rewarded with a first place in the middle section.

Donald Doyle (23) had a career-best round. He had a run of six pars in seven holes and that included two sand saves. He was delighted with his 44 points and even more delighted to learn that he had finished in second place. Donald is certainly one to watch.

And so to the winner. We were all amazed at Jim Cochrane’s 49 points the previous Saturday. Well, BJ McAnarney (23) came within a point of equalling that score.

BJ started poorly and he was eight over par after six holes. He didn’t look like a winner at this stage. He then played the last 10 holes in one over par.

That’s amazing play for a 23 handicapper. He ended up with a nett 57 and an astonishing 48 points.

BJ was a worthy winner of the Bill McMaster Memorial Cup. He will treasure this round of golf for a long time. Congratulations, BJ.
