Big trout still being caught despite cold weather

BITTER cold east winds may put the fish down a bit at Islandderry Fishery, Dromore but the big trout are still being caught with Sean Gibson, Belfast landing a 8lb trout on a cats whisker.

Darrell Johnston, Newcastle landed a lovely 10lb+ fish while Noel Roberts, Portadown had a great day on Saturday despite the weather landing a 6lb, 7lb and 8lb among others. Noel was fishing black buzzers on a floating line with a strike indicator.

Andy McCandless, Dromore also had some good catches this week landing a 6lb+, 7lb+ and 8lb6 trout on his own lure patterns.

The final of the 2012/13 winter league on Saturday 30 March marks the start of the summer late night opening at Islandderry and also the start of the open events at the fishery, the first being the Teggart Memorial competition for Cystic Fibrosis on Saturday 6 April which includes a bait fishing competition on the Hollow Springs lake and a fly fishing competition on the main lake. These are open to everyone and are to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis.

As always there will be plenty of prizes for both the fly and bait competitions, lots of complementary hot food, raffle, and a great days crac for anglers young and old.

The Islandderry Trout Anglers will be holding an open day at the fishery on Saturday 13 April. This is a chance for people, young and old to come along and try their hand at fly fishing with the help of the members.

There is no age limit and anyone can join in, experience fly fishing for the first time or for anglers that can fish come along and learn how to tie a fly with expert tuition from an A.P.G.A.I fly tying instructor or get some tips on casting etc from any of the club members.
