Battling display

TOWN Juniors Under-12s produced a battling performance and some good individual displays but it wasn’t enough to overcome their well organised opponents from Greenisland.

An even contest in the first 20 minutes kept the scoreline at 0-0 as both sets of defenders delt with much of what was thrown at them.

In particular the new central defensive pairing of Arron Devlin and Enda Haddow looked assured and confident in the early stages as they cleared danger and thwarted the Greenisland attack.

Banbridge put good pressure on the Greenisland defence at times in the first half as top goal scorer Jake Corbett held the ball up well, winning free kicks high up the park taking pressure of the Town’s rearguard.

The Juniors were unlucky to go one down as a defensive mix up let in the striker giving keeper Michael McGrath no chance.

In the second period Town went looking for an equaliser and nearly got one when Shea Winters burst through from midfield but didn’t get enough on the ball to trouble the keeper.

Cameron Sands, now playing in his new position in the middle of the park began to get a hold of the game and he set up Ben Johnston for an effort but the winger was also unable to convert.

Jack Arlow switched to the left flank and started to attack giving the Greenisland defence problems but unfortunately the locals couldn’t convert this possession into goals.

Greenisland scored two more on the break but Town hit back and got their goal 10 minutes from the end when Caolan Cribbon was on hand to force the ball home from close range after goalmouth scramble.

Unfortunately the locals conceeded a fourth as they went searching for their second. The scoreline might well have been worse for the Juniors but for an outstanding man of the match display from Aaron Devlin in the heart of the Town’s defence whose bravery and courage was an example to all.
