Bann denied by last minute try

For the second successive week, Banbridge scored four tries against Leinster opposition only to be denied a win by conceding a score from the last action of the game.

The home side took an early lead with a converted try before Bann levelled through a John Porter try. Wesley struck again with a second converted try only for Bann to hit back again, with centre Andrew Morrison collecting his own chip ahead to cross the try line, Ian Porter again adding the extras.

Bann went ahead for the first time when hooker Peter Cromie ran in for a try which Ian Porter again bettered. Wesley struck over a penalty but turning to enjoy the wind, Bann looked well-placed to pick up a bonus point win.

Penalties, three penalties from Wesley to one from Ian Porter, took the scores to 26-24 to the home side.

When Hugo Harbinson went in for Bann’s bonus point try, with Porter again adding the extras, the five pointer looked on the cards. But Wesley came back strongly and Bann’s efforts to contain them resulted in yellow cards in the 70th and 77th minutes.

Wesley turned the screw against the 13-man defence, eventually driving a maul over for the equalising score from a five-metre lineout.

Ervine was pleased that the performance had shown improvement: “There was some really good play out there,” he said.
