Banbridge A team win the Mehaffey Shield

This tournament is now established as one of the premier inter-club juvenile competitions in the South Ulster area.

Tandragee were tenth with a score of 382 and their best player was David Cunningham with a nett 73. Tandragee have a marvellous juvenile set-up and they have recently won the Fred Daly. Congratulations to them and let’s hope that they go on to win the All-Ireland.

Lisburn were ninth on 380 and their best card came from Mark Bailie (11), a nett 72.

An all-girls team from Lurgan were eighth with a team score of 371. Maeve Cummins won the girls best nett with a nett 69. Niamh Ward was runner-up in the girls’ section with a nett 73. We hope to see more girls’ teams next year.

Edenmore were seventh on 365 and their top player was Michael Watson (24) with a nett 68.

The Banbridge B team finished in sixth place with 364. Callum McAleenan (13) shot the best nett score of the day, a superb nett 63. Simon Hodgett (16) also caught the eye with his nett 66.

Lurgan A were fifth with a team score of 359. A nett 66 from Christopher Creeney (12) was their best effort.

Lurgan B were fourth with 358. Conor McPeake (17) shot a nett 67 and he was their best player on the day.

The Banbridge C team did very well to finish in third place overall. Their team score was 353. Mark McCullough (19) shot a nett 67, Thomas Magennis (20) added a nett 68 and Scott Nelson (18) finished with a nett 69. Those were three very good scores.

Kilkeel took the runners-up spot with a score of 350. James McCulla, playing off a seven handicap, went round in a gross 72, nett 65. James took second place in the gross section, losing out to Luke Woods on countback.

And the winners were, not surprisingly, the Banbridge A team. They totalled 334, thanks to five superb scores. Ben Cosgrove (10) had a nett 65, Josh Lockhart (9) had a nett 67, Mark McCoy (11) had a nett 67, Timothy Hodgett (6) had a nett 67 and Luke Woods (4) had a nett 68.

That was a brilliant all-round team performance. The other member of the team was William Malcomlmson (9).

Luke Woods, with his 72, won the individual best gross and Ben Cosgrove won the prize for the second best nett.

The young golfers all owe a debt of gratitude to Susan Magennis, Lady Captain Mildred Hodgett and juvenile convener Trevor Woods for organising such a wonderful competition. It takes a lot of hard work to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
