Banbridge caught by Kilkeel in the All-Ireland

The Banbridge All-Ireland Fourball team, captained by Merton McDowell, are out of the competition, beaten by Kilkeel.

Merton’s team surprisingly lost 1-4 at home so it looked like “mission impossible” as they headed for Kilkeel last Sunday.

But, all credit to the Banbridge players, they fought tooth and nail.

Sean McGreevey and Darren Barker won three and two.

Gerry Blevins and Colin Smylie won four and two.

The match score was now 4-3 in favour of Kilkeel. The comeback was still a possibility.

Johnny McKinstry and Aidan Lavery were very unlucky to lose on the last green by two holes down.

It all depended on Meron McDowell and Robert Haire in the final game. Their opponents proved too strong, winning four and two.

It was a much closer second leg than anyone expected. Merton and his team deserve credit but it is Kilkeel that march forward. We wish them good luck.
