Banbridge boys contest Carryduff singles final

Nathan Cowan and Jason Ferguson from Banbridge Badminton Club ended as boys finalists in last week’s boys’ and girls’ Carryduff singles tournament.

The competition took place in Carryduff Badminton club’s home of St Joseph’s Parish Hall.

Nathan won his place in the tournament decider having beaten Tom Gillespie in the semi final and Jason overcame Alpha’s Rhishab Reddy.

It was Nathan who came away as the tournament winner after beating clubmate Jason in straight sets as he narrowly edged two very close games.

The third/fourth place play-off was a real rollercoaster with Tom Gillespie winning the first game and Rhishab Reddy taking the second.

The final set saw some very long rallies Rhishab managed to gian the upper hand and grab the victory.

Ciara McKenna, daughter of prolific Irish Badminton Champion Eugene, was the winner of the girls’ division in a closely fought competition.

Ciara saw off Katie O’Connor from the Banbridge club in the final.

Unfortunately Eugene was not there to see Ciara as he had just undergone shoulder surgery the previous Friday and was recovering at home.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Ciara left directly after the tournament to play for her GAA team.

Third place went to Carryduff’s Maeve McElroy

A great day’s badminton was enjoyed by all thanks to St Joseph’s and sponsors CAB Consultancy.
