Bailey Russell Tournament set to kick off

DROMORE Amateurs Youth FC are to host the the second running of the George Best Bailey Russell Memorial Trophy on Wednesday August 18.

The tournament is a six-a-side mini soccer event for the U11 age group (i.e. children born on or after January 1, 2000).

The event is being run in conjunction with the George Best Foundation and the Irish Football Association. With many leagues playing full 11-a-side competition at this age group, it is an opportunity for teams to enjoy a faster-paced run-out at mini soccer where the emphasis is on enjoyment rather than outright winning.

The club runs tournament on an annual basis following the tragic passing in May 2008 of Bailey Russell, at the time an under-11 player for the club. The tournament provides an opportunity to remember and honour both ends of the football spectrum – on one hand one of the true greats of the game who displayed breathtaking skills and provided such entertainment, and on the other hand a young enthusiastic bright-eyed boy just starting out and dreaming of a footballing career.

The tournament also features a full 11-a-side game at the under 14 age group featuring the team that Bailey played for in what is sure to be a competitive and entertaining fixture.

The winners of this game become the proud holders for the next year of the George Best Bailey Russell Trophy, a fantastic trophy provided by the George Best Foundation.

All involved are sure that the mix of enjoyment at one end and competitive football at the other will provide a thoroughly enjoyable spectacle and a fitting tribute to both George and Bailey.

The tournament starts at 6pm at Dromore Leisure Centre and spectators are welcome.
