Armoy stage remarkable comeback

Armoy 16 v 14 Strabane

ARMOY staged a remarkable comeback on Saturday when they came from 14-0 down to win 16-14 against a strong Strabane side.

Even from the start, superior rucking and mauling by the visitors had Armoy under pressure and allowed too easy tries to be scored before settling down and starting a comeback.

Two penalties were converted by P Kerr and that was all the scoring for the first half.

After a stern team talk at half time Armoy began to play a good running game with Kelly and McConaghie making some good breaks up the middle.

Cassley and Taggart were hitting everything that moved and Christie was in outstanding form with tackling and running in the loose.

A further penalty by Kerr left Armoy trailing by five points when that man McConaghie got the ball in his own half and evaded the Strabane defence to score under the posts and leave Kerr with a simple conversion to seal the match.

With time running out the referee blew for the end of the match and this left Armoy with a well earned two points.

Captain G Christie said after the match that this was a very well earned and team fitness was working well.

He also appealed for a good turnout at training as there are still a lot of league matches left.
