Amateurs pay the price for missed chances

DROMORE Amateurs made an early exit from the Border Cup on Saturday when visitors Ballywalter Rec ran out two-goal winners at Ferris Park.

Barry Taylor’s side ultimately paid the price for missing a number of chances in the early stages when they dominated proceedings.

A goal at this point might have demoralised Ballywalter and set the Amateurs on the road to a welcome victory.

Instead, the men from the Ards Peninsula weathered the storm and fired a number of warning shots themselves before taking the lead on 27 minutes. From a corner, Dromore keeper Neil Beggs managed to palm away a close-range header but a Ballywalter player fired home the rebound.

Not long after the interval, the Amateurs found themselves trailing 2-0 following a clinical piece of finishing by the Ballywalter striker.

Despite some late flurries of activity in the visitors’ half, Dromore never looked like seriously overcoming the two-goal deficit – leaving a delighted Ballywalter team to make the long journey home dreaming of a cup run.

Team: N Beggs, B Hughes, W McMurray, J Mairs, A McDonald, K Thomas, N Curran, R Downey, S Law, D Smylie, W Hill. Subs: D McCauley, W Beggs, G Hill.
