Alex wins and has handicap reduced

LAST Saturday Banbridge Golf Club’s members played for prizes sponsored by our professional Jason Greenaway.

The prizes were fantastic and there was the potential for the winner to accompany Jason to play at Wentworth later in the season. A total of 196 players took part and enjoyed greens that are improving rapidly every week.

The competition scratch score was 68. This was equalled by five players and bettered by a further 21 players.

John Bell (6) plays in the first fourball each Saturday morning and he was leading the way with a nett 65 for most of the day. John’s round consisted of two birdies, 12 pars and four bogies – a 71 just like that.

Martin McAleenan (10) had a very solid 75 gross, nett 65 and fifth place overall. Martin is a single figure handicapper again.

Cameron Morton (12) had a couple of double bogies in the middle of his round, offset these with two great birdies at the 9th and 12th and three solid pars to complete his round. Another nett 65 and fourth place overall.

Aidy McEvoy (17) finished in third place also with a nett 65. Not much was happening for Aidy until he began the second nine. Six pars were followed with a birdie to put Aidy in a great position. Unfortunately he finish with two double bogeys to finish only two shots behind the winner.

Dean Nicoletti (6) a former senior cup player at Banbridge hasn’t played a lot of golf over the past few years but he has made a great start to 2013. He was three over par after five holes but sorted that with four birdies in the next twelve holes and a bogey at the last leaving a sour taste. At this stage of the season a gross 70 was a great score and a nett 64 meant second place only one shot behind the winner.

And so we come to the winner. Alex Clarke (14) brought all his experience to bear. Despite having a couple of double bogeys Alex made a great start to the second nine with three three’s and finished of with three perfect pars for a score of nett 63 to secure a one shot victory. Alex has had his handicap reduced from 14 to 12 and deservedly so.

There were handicap reductions for Seamus McGrath (17 to 16), Hugo Downey ( 9 to 8), Paul Downey (12 to 11), Michael Robinson (14 to 13), John Bell (6 to 5), Martin McAleenan (10 to 9), Cameron Morton (12 to 11), Aidy McEvoy (17 to 16), Dean Nicoletti (6 to 5) and Alex Clarke (14 to 12). A few pointers here to men in form early in the season.
