AFC out of Cup, hit for six in Richill

Richill 6 - 0 Banbridge AFC

AFC were well beaten 6-0 at Richill in the Alan Wilson Cup on Saturday.

Straight from the start, Richill progressed up the left wing, the winger cut inside and the first shot of the game found the back of the net from 20 yards with barely 45 seconds on the clock.

AFC were in shock and this transfered to their passing. Unable to get a hold of the ball and giving away needless possession. AFC went 2-0 down on 15 minutes. When a corner was missed at the front post by Richill’s centre forward, it deflected in off Carl Walker.

Richhill pressed again and again, on another day they could have had seven or eight goals in the first 20 minutes if not for some excellent work between the AFC posts by Phil Goan.

The Boys club finally stepped up and they did create a few chances. Burns and McKay up front combined well from an AFC corner but the home keeper was never really troubled.

On 24 minutes, another corner saw Sean McKay’s effort come back off the post. Richhill however pounced on the breaking ball, with a swift counter attack. Ritchie Morrison forced his way into AFC’s box, turned Simon Canning and drilled his shot past Goan. A fourth soon followed with Richhill playing the ball through their five man midfield and finishing well.

John Lennon then had a fine effort come back off the crossbar on 35 minutes, yet his hard work in midfield would be undone in the AFC back line. A Richhill corner wasn’t cleared and a goalmouth scramble saw the scoreline rise to five.

AFC came out in the second half dejected and soon it was 6-0 when an unmarked Richhill player had the easiest of headers inside AFC’s six yard box, from a well delivered corner.

AFC did press well in spells with a number of corners and freekicks but never really looked like scoring. It was an all round disappointing display by the Banbridge team.
