Academy set up semi-final date with Wallace

THE Belmont Hotel backed Senior First XI boys hockey team beat RBAI on Wednesday at Lisnagarvey to secure a place in the McCullough Cup semi-final.

The game which began at 2.30pm started brightly with Rory Woods cutting inside to give them the lead after just a few moments.

The restart saw the Academy in the ascendancy again and David McCracken scored at the back post to double the lead.

Then in a four minute exhibition the Academy made it 5-0 with a double from Warnock and Woods.

The second half saw sloppy patterns from both sides and Keeper Bingham saved superbly on three occasions to keep RBAI at bay.

The later stages of the game saw several sin-bins and the rhythm never really got going until a silky run from McKee resulted in a deft slip to give Warnock his hat trick.

Not to be outdone Rory Woods finished off a fine platform from midfield to wrong foot the Instonian keeper before popping the ball into an empty goal from the tightest of angles. The boys will now face a buoyant Friends School Lisburn side at their home patch in front of a bumper Lisburn crowd.

That semi-final will once again be at Lisnagarvey on Wednesday December 5 at 2.15pm. In the other semi final Wallace will face Sullivan Upper at Stormont - and they will be hungry to follow their Lisburn rivals and make it an all Lisburn final for the first time in many many years.

The Academy will hope to bring a strong vocal support and aim to improve upon the overall performance today.

Nevertheless an important stepping stone for the team well taken.
