Academy pupils show leadership in competition

Congratulations have been sent to Banbridge Academy’s level one and two Sportsleaders for running a tremendous Asda Cordner Shield on Friday June 21.

A total of nine primary school teams took part and the winners Ballydown PS beat a slick Edenderry side on the shoot outs after skill packed game and extra time.

Thanks go to Asda, PMHC, Craigavon Borough Council, Edenvilla PLC and especially Andrew Bennington, Sam McMurray, Nathan Liggett, Lee Groves, Peter McKnight and all the outstanding Sportsleaders for such an excellent show of Academy leadership.

Thanks to Geoffrey Edgar, Paul Bennett, Justin Barr, Johnny Hassin, Jeremy and Ryan from PMHC for a fabulous job!

Special thanks goes to guest Eugene Magee who helped coach and presented awards to each player who took part. A big shout must go to Andrew Bennington who designed certificates for each participant as well as tweaking the structure that Sam McMurray and Nathan Liggett initially masterminded. Well done to the face painters, time keepers , umpires, coaches, team representatives, meet and greeters, media members and even the burger flippers for making it such a great occasion.

Mr Mark Cordner made a brief speech thanking everyone and paying tribute to his grandmother who donated the Cordner Shield in 1996, won in its first year by Cookstown Hockey Club U10s.

Since then it has travelled to winners as far away as Rover-Oxford Hockey Club to as close as Edenderry Primary School and now rests in Ballydown Primary School.

Thanks to Peter Bingham too for being a great sport.
