Academy hockey sides do their bit for Haiti

ALL parents, pupils and hockey followers are warmly invited to Havelock on Saturday as the boys and girls sides take to the field in their Schools Cup fixtures.

The Senior First XI will be taking on Bangor Grammar at 9.30am in the second round of the Ulster Bank Burney Cup, which will be followed by the Girls’ First XI who face Enniskillen in the Schools Plate competition at 11am.

Master in Charge of Boys’ Hockey, Mark Cordner, explains the idea behind the morning. “It is Schools Cup Hockey Saturday and traditionally we have always welcomed back former players and pupils to our games,” he said.

“This year will be different as we have the facilities at Havelock fully available and thanks to the leadership of Mrs Dawson in the upstairs kitchen, will be serving hot and cold refreshments with all proceeds being given to the terrible ongoing situation in Haiti.”

The Burney game will take centre stage with former head boy Steven Dawson, now a Mathematics teacher in the Academy, hoping that his side can turn it on against a plucky Bangor side coached by former Ulster player Dowie Hollie.

Former pupils Richard Cowan and Mark Dowds will both be umpiring the game with Stuart Singer putting on the pre-match commentary from Havelock HQ.

All support for the boys and girls games will be greatly appreciated and once again the boys’ senior squads would like to thanks the Belmont Hotel for their loyal sponsorship of the Burney campaign.
