Academy up for the Cup once again

Banbridge Academy are aiming to reach their sixth successive Burney Cup final on Wednesday.

The travel to Lisnagarvey’s Comber Road to take on Regent House in the semi-final (pass-back 2.30pm) as they continue the defence of the crown that they have won four years in a row.

The Academy beat Grosvenor 5-2 to reach the final four but the school’s Master in charge of Hockey Mark Cordner isn’t taking a win for granted against a Regent side who smashed Bangor 7-5 in their quarter-final

“Regent House will be a different proposition for us than Grosvenor,” he said.

“They’re capable of scoring goals and have some good players in their side like McKibbin and Jones. They’re coached by davey Robb, who played for Ulster so they’ll be well drilled.

“We know that we’ll be heavey favourites though. Our preparations have been good. Eugene Magee, John Clarke and myself have been doing a lot of work with the boys. We’ve even had some Sunday sessions to alleviate the time we’ve missed with boys being away with Ulster.”

Th Academy will, however, be without goal-scorer Matthew Warnock.
