Academy into Burney quarters

THE Belmont Hotel sponsored Academy First XI saw off the formidable challenge at Cookstown with a goal in extra time.

The game was played at a great pace and the first half saw three set pieces from both teams charged down in a hard fought first period.

The second half started brightly for the Academy and they led 2-0 after the opening ten minutes with some slick running and movement allowing Matthew Warnock and Rory Woods to open the scoreboard. But the Academy naively continued to push and some quick direct hockey from Cookstown pegged it back to level terms with their talisman Tim Sloan deflecting home.

The game ebbed and flowed with four sin bins , two for each side but it took a neat piece of play to see Rory Woods score what would be the winner in the first phase of extra time.

The Academy now progress to the Burney Quarter final and will face another away tie. This time it will be staged at Deramore Park and a side Coach Steven Dawson knows well in Methodist College.

The draw is as follows: Friends School Lisburn v Royal & Prior; Kilkeel HS v RBAI; CCB v Sullivan Upper; MCB v Banbridge Academy

The school’s thanks goes to the parents who made the trip to Cookstown this morning and supported the team so well. And to the umpires Russell Donaldson and Richard Cowan.
