Two British teenagers have died while parasailing in Greece - here’s what happened

Two British teenagers have been killed in a parasailing accident in Rhodes, Greece, and a third person has been injured.

The Greek coastguard said that two brothers, aged 15 and 13, and their female cousin, 15, were on holiday when a rope attached to their parachute snapped.

The 13 year old boy and 15 year old girl died, while the 15 year boy is in a “serious condition with multiple injuries” in a hospital on the island.

The coastguard said in a statement, “They were following a speedboat. The rope was cut.

“The boy and girl were killed and another was heavily injured and brought to hospital. It is under investigation about how the rope was cut.”

The three were found on rocks near Lindos, on the island of Rhodes.

Greek media has reported that, after the rope snapped, high winds caused the trio to drift towards the rocks.

Watersports under scrutiny in Greece

Watersports in Greece have been the subject of growing scrutiny. Regulations have increased, and sports centres must now be specially certified to operate.

According to local press, current regulations for parasailing in the county state that it is against the law for three or more people to be towed at the same time.

Rhodes officials confirmed that the man driving the speedboat at the time of the accident and the owner of the watersports company have been arrested, and will soon appear before a public prosecutor.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said, “We are supporting the family of two British people following their death in Rhodes, and are in contact with the Greek authorities.”
