Young Roots project ready for website launch

YOUNG people from the ‘Young Roots’ Heritage funded project are working hard to complete their challenges for the ASDAN Youth Achievement Awards.

The group is tackling Gold, Silver and Bronze awards and these are based on work carried out with the ‘Rings of Time’ project, which is based in the Community Centre in Laurencetown.

Participants in the ‘Rings of Time’ Heritage Lottery funded project have joined with Tullylish Historical Society to plan a series of community events for the ‘Young Roots’ street festival which takes place in Laurencetown during the last week of March.

Just over a year ago the group was inspired to act when the old Horse Chestnut tree in the grounds of the existing community centre - formerly the National School - was felled due to decay.

The young people decided to commemorate the significance of the tree by creating a heritage website based on the age of the tree and enlisting the help of local historian Plunkett Campbell and well known photographer, Brendan Byrne.

Plunkett has been central to the documenting of local history while Brendan has helped the group source photographs which will enhance and illuminate the website designed by Paul Lyness of Ezsolutions. It will be launched on Friday, March 30, and can be accessed at www.ringsoftime.com

The launch will take place during the street festival and all members of the community are invited to attend the event which starts at 6.30pm.

More festival details are available from the Community Centre, Laurencetown, and Gettin Ahead Facebook page.
