Year’s supply of tea and coffee up for grabs

ANY school, business, church or community group in the Banbridge District that supports Banbridge District Council’s campaign to achieve Fairtrade status for the district will be entered into a competition to win a year’s supply of Fairtrade tea and coffee.

Every organisation that enters the competition must satisfy three criteria. Firstly, they must display a certificate pledging their support for Fairtrade in a prominent place within their premises where customers or visitors can easily see it. Secondly, they must use at least two Fairtrade products and thirdly, they must increase awareness of Fairtrade among staff. The council will provide the certificate and posters to help organisations fulfil these requirements.

Council Waste and Environmental Manager, Barry Patience, said, “To achieve Fairtrade status, we as a community must demonstrate a shared commitment to Fairtrade in our district. We’ve made good progress in working towards Fairtrade status but we still need more individuals to buy Fairtrade products and more organisations to come forward and add their name to the growing list of supporters. Only six other places in Northern Ireland have achieved this status to date and we would like Banbridge to be seventh - but we can’t do this without the support of the wider community.”

The council has produced a leaflet explaining what Fairtrade is all about and where the public can buy Fairtrade products locally.

Organisations can support the Fairtrade campaign and enter the competition by contacting the council on 4066 0604. The winning organisation will be announced shortly after the closing date of Monday 16 April 2012.
