Winning streak for the regional college

Staff and students at SRC celebrate their successes.

Initial feedback is looking extremely favourable with staff and students campus wide very keen to read the full report which will be published early in the New Year.

The College’s winning streak began when SRC students dazzled judges with a Gold, Silver and Bronze at The UK Skills Competition held recently in the NEC, in Birmingham. Shane Branagan from Rathfriland won the UK Skills gold medal for plumbing with Gary Doyle from Katesbridge picking up the silver medal.

The College success continued with Nikita Harron from Dromore winning the UK Skills bronze award for Health Care and William Megaw from Hilltown was ‘highly commended’ for joinery.

Further celebrations occurred when Southern Regional College won a coveted ‘Further Education Oscar’. The prestigious Association of Colleges Beacon Award for Widening Participation to Lifelong Learning was presented to SRC for the ‘Transforming Learning Communities’ project.

This Big Lottery funded programme actively attracts adult learners to re-engage in learning and is proactive with two local communities namely, migrant workers and travellers.

And finally, ensuring a successful end to 2013, the International Association of Book-Keepers (IAB) has awarded Southern Regional College with a Gold Centre Award. SRC obtained this award in recognition of the college’s high standards and the learners’ achievements, striking the Gold standard as part of IAB’s 40th Anniversary celebrations.

The award was presented at the prestigious Top UK and International Centre Awards reception held at the House of Commons, London.

College Chief Executive Brian Doran said: “I offer my warm congratulations to everyone across the College on all of the recent magnificent achievements.

“I really appreciate the effort and commitment that has been shown not only over the last number of weeks but on an ongoing basis throughout SRC. The dedication of staff and students is second to none and I am delighted that everyone in SRC is staying true to our college ethos; ‘Go Further, Aim Higher’.”
