Went in '˜like the Dukes of Hazzard'

David James Power (19), Keelmount Grange, Portadown, was in court to be sentenced for common assault and criminal damage to a car on April 7 last year.

The court heard that at approximately 10.15pm the injured party was in Keelmount Mews dropping a friend off when he was assaulted by the defendant and his brother.

The front, rear and all side windows of his car were smashed, the wing mirrors were broken and there were dents in the bodywork.

Power admitted breaking the driver’s side window to gain entry and grab the injured party before pulling him out of the car.

The case had been adjourned from a previous court for the defendant to bring £720 compensation to court towards the cost of repairing the damage to the car.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said they went in like the ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ as far as their sister was concerned which wasn’t the correct approach even if there were underlying issues.

She appreciated that it was a ‘nasty incident’ which could have been much worse and must have been ‘very frightening’ for the injured party.

Judge Kelly made a compensation order for £720 and gave Power a conditional discharge for two years on each charge.

She told Power: “This is hanging over your head and may make you think twice about this sort of behaviour in the future.”
