Weather warning: Met Office issues ice alert

A Yellow Ice warning has been issued by the Met Office for Northern Ireland overnight and into Tuesday's rush hour.

The Met Office says icy stretches are expected to form on many untreated roads and pavements on Monday night, lasting into Tuesday morning and has warned drivers of the risk of difficult driving conditions.

The warning, in place from midnight until 9am tomorrow, continues: “Showers will affect much of Northern Ireland on Monday evening, these turning wintry on high ground.

“Overnight, showers will become more isolated, and as skies clear, road and pavement temperatures will fall below freezing, and with surfaces wet, icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces. In addition any remaining showers, mainly in the north, could fall onto frozen surfaces, and leave up to 1 cm of snow on high ground above 200 to 300metres.”
