Video: Hundreds attend WWI Cookstown peace vigil

Hundreds of people from all sides of the community came together for a candle-lit peace vigil to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War on Monday night.

The Commemoration was led by the Royal British Legion and associated organisations who proceeded with a lone piper from the Legion Car Park to the Cenotaph for a short service.

People also converged in the town centre from three other points – the Oldtown, Molesworth Street (Lidl Car Park) and Derryloran Parish Hall Car Park – with all four groups – from the North, South, East and West.

The service itself included an Act of Remembrance, Laying of Wreaths, Readings from Scripture and Prayers for Peace.

It was a fitting and unique Centennial memorial tribute to those from our community who were to suffer and die in the terrible carnage of that war.
