Victim turned on police who were helping her

After a woman had been the victim of a domestic assault police brought her home but she turned on them and assaulted an officer.

Ashley Leslie Harper (28), Churchview Drive, Banbridge, admitted the assault charge last Thursday at the local magistrates’ court.

She was given a conditional discharge for 12 months.

The court heard that on January 7 this year police received a report of a domestic incident in Banbridge town centre.

Harper was the injured party but she was uncooperative with police.

There was a smell of intoxicating liquor on her breath and she was very distressed.

Police brought her home but she told them to ‘f—k off’ and pushed a female officer.

A solicitor representing Harper said had been a victim of domestic violence and police had conveyed her home because they were concerned for her safety.

He added that because she had been a victim and was drunk she rounded on police.

The solicitor said Harper couldn’t remember pushing an officer but thought that she had just brushed past them.

She would apologise for her behaviour.

District Judge Rosalie Prytherch told the defendant police had gone out of their way to make sure she was safe and got home.

She added that the defendant had now accepted, through her solicitor, that her behaviour was wrong.
