UUP announce council candidates

John Hanna and Elizabeth Ingram, who both currently sit in Banbridge council as representatives of that ward, will stand again this year while the UUP’s South West Down branch secretary Glenn Barr is standing as a new face on the local political scene.

Association chairman John Young and Scarva Branch Chairman Joe Baird have both welcomed the three candidates as a strong team to contest the Knockiveagh area.

Glen Barr, a sports development officer who is married with two young children, said he is well aware of many local issues, namely social deprivation, Rathfriland Health Centre’s out-dated building, and funding for Christmas events throughout the district.

Mr Barr said he has already received a number of calls from people seeking help on everyday issues ranging from potholes to planning problems.

“All too often people feel frustrated at the lack of political representation in their area. I am here to change that and become a proper voice for the people of Knockiveagh,” said Mr Barr. “I am not afraid to let my voice be heard and that is the reason I joined the UUP.”

Councillor John Hanna said he is keen to continue the work he has done in the area during the past 18 years.

He listed the expansion and development of the area’s business centre, work at Rathfriland Enterprise Centre and the duelling of the A1 among his past. achievements.

“As your local Ulster Unionist Councillor I would ask for your continued support in Knockiveagh,” said Mr Hanna. “Thank you for your support over the past 18 years, as an experienced and hard working councillor I hope you will vote for me on May 5 and I promise to continue with the good work.”

Councillor Elizabeth Ingram has served in the area for four years and expressed her eagerness to continue in her current role.

“Having lived in the area for many years, and serving as a UUP councillor for four years, I am only too aware of the issues facing our young families, elderly and local businesses and schools,” said Mrs Ingram. “From my proven track record, I can assure them that I am always available, and devoted to my role as a councillor for all the people.”
