Rise in prisoners hospitalised by drugs

THE number of prisoners hospitalised after taking illegal drugs has increased over the last number of years with 11 requiring treatment outside jail in 2012.

This was up from seven in 2012. In 2008 just two prisoners were hospitalised and in 2009 just three required treatment.

No prisoner had to go to hospital in 2010.

There was also an increase in the number of prisoners treated for the effects of taking illegal drugs in local jails.

The number of prisoners requiring treatment in jail rose from one in 2008; to two in 2009; to five in 2010; falling back to two in 2011; before leaping to nine last year.

No prisoners were reported to have suffered long term health damage as a result of taking illegal drugs.
