Digital scanning oflargest monumentfor 400th birthday

THE largest scheduled monument in Northern Ireland is being digitally scanned for their 400th birthday.

Construction of the Derry Walls started almost 400 years ago, shortly after King James granted Londonderry its Royal Charter on March 29, 1613.

The work is being carried out by the Discovery Programme based in Dublin.

3D-ICONS is a three year EU co-funded project which will focus on the 3D documentation of UNESCO World Heritage monuments and other monuments of outstanding value at European level.

Mark Lusby, Holywell Trust, remarked: “We will be showcasing some of the results obtained, so far, at the Walls 400! History Conference on 6th and 7th of April.

“We are working with Digital Derry and the Nerve Centre Fab Lab to look at how the data generated by the Discovery Programme can be used for our heritage education programmes and to help entrepreneurs develop new commercial products .

“The fact that Derry’s Walls have been selected is testimony to how their heritage value is perceived at a national and European level.” .

Also on show at the conference will be the work of Londonderry digital artist, Shaun Whoriskey, who is working with the Holywell Trust to digitally modelling Bishop’s Gate, revealing historic details and creating a timeline, showing how the gate has evolved since 1613.

The Walls 400! History Conference takes place over the weekend of 6-7th April and tickets must be purchased in advance from the Playhouse Box Office.
