26% rise in Waterside housing list applicants

THE amount of people waiting for houses in the Waterside spiked by 26 per cent between 2012 and 2013, it’s emerged.

There were 748 applicants in the Housing Executive district in May 2012. But this leapt by 195 to 943 in March 2013.

Across the whole of Londonderry, an incredible 3,286 people were waiting for houses.

This signifies a massive rise over the past five years.

Between 2009 and 2013 the amount of people waiting for houses across the city rose by 36 per cent from 2,418 to 3,286. And last year alone the amount of people waiting for houses across the Waterside, Collon Terrace and Waterloo Place rose by 19 per cent from 2,762 to 3,286.

Housing Minister Nelson McCausland outlined the increased number of applicants for NIHE stock in response to an Assembly Question from local MLA Colum Eastwood.
