Martin Devlin (38), Edenderry Gardens, Banbridge, was fined £200 and banned for 16 months last Thursday at the local court for driving with excess alcohol on November 16.

Fines of £100 and concurrent 12 month bans were imposed for not having insurance or a licence.

And he was also fined £50 for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

The court heard that a police mobile patrol saw a car take off at speed and veer over the while line.

They stopped the vehicle on the Huntley Road, Banbridge, and smelled alcohol on Devlin’s breath.

He admitted he had taken the car without permission and did not have insurance or a licence. A breath test gave a reading of 82.

A solicitor representing Devlin said that on the night in question he had taken some beers and made the foolish decision to take his partner’s car.

She explained that the defendant had a panic attack.

His partner was out so he needed to talk to someone.

The solicitor added that he decided to drive to a friend’s house but when he realised he had made a foolish decision he turned around. He was making his way home when the police intercepted him.
