Threw himself to the ground and shouted ‘police brutality’

A 34-year-old man threw himself to the ground and shouted ‘police brutality’ during an incident, Banbridge Magistrates Court heard last Thursday.

Wayne David Redpath, Seapatrick Avenue, Seapatrick, Banbridge, faced charges of disorderly behaviour and obstructing a constable on March 4 this year.

The court was told that the prosecution was willing to drop the charges if Redpath agreed to be bound over.

A prosecutor said that at 12.25am police saw a car coming from the Outlet retail park and were concerned about the manner in which it was being driven.

Redpath was a front seat passenger.

The car pulled into a lay-by and the occupants refused to unlock the doors.

This situation continued for ten to 15 minutes.

When the door was open the defendant was asked for his details but refused to provide his identity.

He also refused to exit the car and when he taken out he threw himself on the ground and shouted police brutality.

Redpath was arrested for disorderly behaviour and continued to refuse to identify himself to police.

He said he did not recognise the police and the judicial system.

A solicitor for the defendant said this is something which would not be repeated.

District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, said the defendant was fortunate the PPS had taken such a generous view of the matter.

He bound Redpath over in sum of £500 for two years to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
