Three-car collision at Mather's bend

THERE have been calls for increased road safety measures on the Rathfriland Road in Banbridge following a three-car collision on Monday morning.

Four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the accident at Mather’s Bend just after 11am and the road was closed between junctions at the Ballydown Road and Lisnaree Road.

Earlier that morning police issued a warning to traffic regarding a diesel spill on the road.

Independent councillor Dessie Ward said more can be done to prevent future accidents.

"This accident is the latest in a long line at Mather's Bend which is widely regarded by local people as an accident blackspot,” he said. “I would call on Roads Service to take urgent action to improve road safety there before we have a fatality on our hands.

"On my way into Banbridge this morning I came across the scene of the accident and it looked to be a whole lot worse than it actually was. I fear that we may not be as lucky in the future."
