Leo McDermott (34), Ballymoney Road, Banbridge, admitted driving without insurance last Thursday at the local magistrates’ court.

He was given a conditional discharge for a period of one year.

The court heard he was stopped at 11.30am on the Rathfriland Road, Banbridge, and asked to produce his insurance within seven days.

On June 19 he called at Banbridge police station and it was discovered he was not insured on the date he was stopped. He had no previous convictions.

A barrister representing the defendant said he had loaned the car to his sister-in-law and the policy was transferred over.

He added that McDermott thought that his insurance company had switched it back again. He renewed his insurance the same day.

Imposing the conditional discharge Deputy District Judge, Mr John Connolly, said there had been an unfortunate set of circumstances.
