Take a step for the Action MS fundraiser

A NUMBER of schools across the district will be taking steps towards a charity total for Action MS this month.

The four-mile fundraiser, due to take place on Saturday October 23, will feature Banbridge Academy, Banbridge High School, St Patrick’s College, Dromore High School and Rathfriland High School.

Action MS, Northern Ireland’s multiple sclerosis charity, is inviting any keen local people to join in as the charity celebrates 30 years of Walks for MS at Tollymore Forest Park, Newcastle at 1pm.

Mr McConkey, a teacher at Banbridge Academy, said the event has historical significance for the school. “Some 200 pupils at the school walked in 1980 raising a total of 2,150.00 for multiple sclerosis research.

“We all thoroughly enjoyed the walk for MS and Banbridge Academy was delighted to win the first-ever Bronze Boot Award as the top fundraising school. It is a much-coveted prize amongst schools participating in the Walk for MS, a prize that Banbridge Academy went on to collect on a further two occasions in 1996 and 2002.

“I would invite all of our former pupils to come along and join the 30th Anniversary Walk for MS.”

Pamela Barbour was the charity coordinator at Rathfriland High School for some 20 years before her recent retirement.

“Fundraising with Action MS has been a great experience and privilege,” said Mrs Barbour. “I hope that I have been able to heighten awareness of multiple sclerosis amongst the school community and wider field.

“I would encourage everyone whether they walked as a child or not to participate in the Walk for MS.”
