Jonathon Barton, c/o Hydebank, admitted assaulting a police officer on March 17 this year.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendant, said his client wanted the matter disposed of without the benefit of a pre-sentence report.

The court heard that Barton had swung his elbow towards the face of an officer and struggled with police.

Mr Downey said his client had a lot of alcohol taken that day.

He explained that Barton had been in custody since May 22 and was serving a sentence with a release date of November 21.

Mr Downey asked the court to deal with the matter in a way which would not extend his client’s sentence.

Deputy District Judge Browne said Barton had an unimpressive record for someone so young.
