Switch on event set to go ahead in Moira

Lisburn City Council has stepped in to give Moira a switch on event after all after no community groups came forward this year to partner with the council.

The council stepped in after no applications were received from any Moira groups for a Christmas tree grant and now the event will be held on December 11 at 7.00pm

The community group that had been involved before and who had organised it for many years, decided not to take part this year, and other groups in the area did not to apply for funding. Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, which provides funding assistance for community switch ons, said: “Following representation from elected members and residents of the Moira area I am delighted that the council agreed unanimously to provide a Christmas tree for Moira Main Street this year.

“I am pleased as Chairman to be working with council officers on this community initiative.

“Christmas is a very important time of the year for both families and communities. It is a tradition for the local residents to gather in Main Street and as a community turn the Christmas lights on.

“On behalf of the Council, I would encourage local residents to attend this event and share in the festive spirit. Christmas is also a time to think of others who may need a helping hand and I ask all of us to remember the true meaning of Christmas and help those in need, whatever way they can,” concluded Alderman Porter

“The council will continue to work with local community groups to ensure this long tradition of community switch ons remain part of the vibrance of the area.

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of the Council’s Economic Development Committee too was delighted at the news.

He said. “The Christmas Tree will ensure that the festive season is all tinsel and bright for those in Moira.”

Councillor Alexander Redpath said that he was delighted that the council got involved.

“I’m glad Lisburn Council have agreed to run this event,” he said. “Moira is one of the largest villages in Lisburn Council and it would have been very sad if we had no light switch on event. It’s regrettable that we were unable to identify a community partner and we will have to redouble our efforts to find a suitable partner for next year.

“It is better that these events are run by the community collaborating with the Council. If any group would be interested in organising this event next year get in touch.”
