Summer Jamm returns to Strabane

The event is being organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from Diageo and the theme for this year’s celebration is ‘country-fest’.

Strabane will set the stage for some traditional country fair style entertainment with live music, dancing, busking, market stalls and even a carnival funfair.

Launching the event the Mayor, Elisha McCallion, said there would be plenty of family friendly activities taking place over the course of the weekend. “The Summer Jamm event is hugely popular and we’re expecting a great turn out again this year. It’s fantastic that the festival is taking place over two days this year with even more entertainment on offer for all ages.

“I would really encourage everyone to mark the date in their diary so they can join in the festivities and celebrate Summer Jamm in true country style.”

The weekend action will take place over a number of venues beginning with activities on Main Street, Castle Street, Butcher Street Car Park and the Alley Theatre. During the day families can enjoy live music on Main Street including a special performance from Jim Devine and support from a whole host of local talent.

Adding to the musical buzz, a busking competition will also take place throughout the town, while Castle Street will host a range of children’s activities including a circus school, arts, crafts, face painting and street entertainment.

There will also be a funfair in full swing, with entertainment for families is set to take over the whole of Butcher Street, while the Alley theatre will be the venue to visit for some entertaining children’s performances.

In the evening, the focus will be on the very best live music with a special music trail through the local pubs and venues. And the music theme continues into Sunday June 11, with an afternoon concert at the Score Site headlined by popular country singer Lisa McHugh, with support from Ritchie Remo. The entertainment will have you on your feet from 3pm to 7.30pm.

Events officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council Liz Cunningham said the event would be a great draw for visitors.

“We had thousands turn out for Summer Jamm last year and with two days of activities planned for 2016 we’re anticipating even greater visitor numbers to the area. It’s fantastic to see the event building into a full festival weekend with entertainment for all ages and I hope everyone will come out in support.”
