Spearheaded by Rathfriland residents Leslie and Ramona Williams, and supported by UK charity Hearing Link, the 15-strong group met every Tuesday in the Training Room at Tesco’s Bridgewater Extra Store, where experienced lipreading tutor Anne Madill provided instruction.

Grateful, they said, for all the support they received in making the group a reality, founders Leslie and Ramona hope to run the course again later in the year.

“It was a delight to see this course up and running,” said Leslie. “We are grateful to Anne for her excellent input to the classes and her fun exercises with the group.

“We all learned so much and will now have to put it all into practice.

“We want to thank Tesco Bridgewater for providing the community space where the group met, and Hearing Link for their support in getting the group up and running.

“We hope this class can meet up again later in the year and we can maybe even start a new group for others who would like to take part.”

Hearing Link’s Northern Ireland manager Michelle McMaster said: “It was an absolute delight to welcome a full group of participants along to all six sessions of the Banbridge Lipreading Group.

“This is a wonderful start for the project and we are all looking forward to potentially running another group later in the year.

“If anyone can support our efforts by donating, please get in touch. These classes are extremely worthwhile.”
