Success for local young people

Young people with a learning disability in Banbridge and Craigavon have completed a personal development programme.

Cathy McAdam, Community Access Officer with the Southern Health and Social Care Trust which organised the programme in partnership with 1825 Project, said: “The programme is about enhancing young people’s independence, self-esteem, confidence and social skills.

They attended one day each week for year and covered topics such as personal safety, sexual health, drug and alcohol awareness, lifeskills and physical activity.”

Mel McConville, from 1825 Project, added “Once again we have successfully completed a SHAPE Programme. As always it has been amazing to see the improvement in the development and confidence of the young people as the programme progressed. This reinforces what we already know; the SHAPE Programme is a superb model in providing personal development training for these groups of young people.”

A young person said: “I have really enjoyed my time on the SHAPE Programme. I have learned so many new things.”

Another commented: “Some of my friends did the SHAPE Programme last year and had

told me all about it. I wanted to do it so much. It was better than I expected. I made new friends and learned so much about myself.”
