SRC changes won’t affect Banbridge

Banbridge Southern Regional College (SRC) campus will not be affected by changes happening at the Portadown and Lurgan sites.

This follows the news that a possible site for a new purpose-built SRC campus in central Craigavon has been earmarked and a design team is to be appointed next month.

However a spokesperson for SRC said that plans for the new purpose-built campus in Craigavon will not affect Banbridge and in fact plans are already in place to redevelop the current campus in the town.

Jim O’Hagan, SRC Director of Finance and Corporate Services said: “SRC remains committed to having a campus in Banbridge and our estates plans include a new build on the existing site on the Castlewellan Road.”

The Department of Employment and Learning said the SRC is working with Craigavon Council and the Planning Authority to pinpoint a site with the aim of appointing a design team for Craigavon.

The project will see the SRC campuses in Portadown and Lurgan replaced with a single, purpose-built campus.

Alderman Stephen Moutray, the Upper Bann MLA, said he hopes the college would be built close to Craigavon Lakes, the location for a new state-of-the-art leisure centre.

A spokesperson for the Department for Employment and Learning said, “The College is working with the District Council and the Planning Authority to identify and secure a suitable site for the new development.”

Speaking in response to DUP man Mr Moutray in the Assembly, Minister Stephen Farry said the Southern Regional College is planning major capital investment projects at Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon.
