Special book to mark 50 years

For many years from the 1960s to 1990s school magazines were published, highlighting the many and varied activities of those attending Rathfriland High School.

The school website, www.rathfrilandhigh.co.uk, and “RHS Outlook” continue this tradition exhibiting photographs and newsworthy items in both a digital and paper-based format.

The year book is a very special publication to celebrate the 50 tears the school, formally known as Rathfriland County Secondary Intermediate, has been in existence,

Said Mrs Ruth Chalmers, the school’s Vice Principal, “There are many people who have made this publication possible, those who have hunted out old photographs or taken time to write down their memories of the High School, to you many thanks.

“The Year Book is divided into three main sections: the introduction and reflection by Mrs Amanda McCullough, Acting Principal; 1961 to 2011 – included are memoirs from the four former Principals who provided accounts of their tenure along with two former Vice-Principals. Articles and photographs from past pupils and old school magazines add further insight.

“Also included in this section are some of the sporting activities, school plays, concerts and school trips over the years as well as a brief glimpse into some of the charity work undertaken by pupils and staff.

“Finally ‘the Anniversary Year 2011-2012’ – each subject area provided photographs and articles reflecting some of the events and activities of 2011-2012 including various events to celebrate the schools 50 years – November Prize Night with the four Principals, the staff dinner for current and past staff, the planting of a rowan tree - found on the school badge - and the presentation to pupils and staff of commemorative mugs bearing both the school crest and the Diamond Jubilee logo.”

It is hoped that the photographs and stories will give you, the reader, a flavour of Rathfriland High from its opening five decades ago until the present day and to reflect the positive experiences this School has afforded to the many pupils who have been through our doors.

Only 300 books have been published and there will not be a reprint.

Books are on sale from the main school office for the minimum donation £10.

Contributions will help defray the cost of publishing this 96 page book.
