It has been claimed that youths have been engaged in under-age drinking and have then decided to wreak havoc upon nearby elderly residents.

Glass bottles and stones have been thrown at homes and in the last few weeks youths are alleged to have set fire to grass and hedges on vacant land near the homes.

Commenting on the incidents Mr Sydney Anderson MLA said: “I totally condemn this recent sharp rise in the level of anti-social behaviour taking place in the area. I have been contacted by residents living in Iveagh Mews and they are extremely annoyed and fearful about what has been going on.

“It is shameful that the young people involved in this behaviour have so little respect and understanding for elderly members of our community.”

Mr Anderson added: “Moving forward, I now intend to have meetings with the PSNI and also with the owners of the vacant land near Iveagh Mews where this despicable activity appears to be concentrated.

“I will be informing the police that action needs to take place immediately to put an end to this anti-social behaviour once and for all. I will not allow elderly residents who want to go about their lives in a peaceful manner be terrorised by unruly youths.”
