So what's the cause?

POTHOLES are common after cold weather and, following Met Office confirmation of the worst winter in 25 years, the roads have been causing havoc for motorists across the district.

Roads Service have been “patching” where roads are worst affected. A spokesperson said, “In cold and wet weather water often gets into any cracks that might already be present in the road from general wear and tear. When water gets under the road’s surface and a freezing spell follows the water turns to ice and expands - widening any cracks and blowing apart any underlying structure.

“The material underneath the roads is of a soft, plasticine texture and when that is mixed with the water it turns into a mixture of clay and loose gravel.

“The adverse weather has definitely not done the roads any good and we are busier than ever in trying to fix them along with carrying out schedules repairs and resurfacing anyway.”
