Smoke alarms avert disaster

A WORKING smoke alarm and the fire service were praised for averting a major fire in the Victoria Street area.

The kitchen of a Victoria Gardens house was left badly damaged after a blaze broke out on Sunday evening.

Fire crews attended and a 55-year-old woman was treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

The owner of the house said it could have been much worse, he added: "We have two really good fire alarms - you could hear them from down the street.

"I was on the way home from work and my wife had put the kettle on and minutes later the fire alarms went off.

"The fire service was at the house within three of four minutes and they managed to put it out before it spread.

"We were very lucky - it could have been much worse."

He went on: "This shows the benefit of having a working fire alarm, I dread to think what could have happened."
