The court heard that police went to an address in Banbridge after a report of an assault which had taken place in the Downshire Arms.

There had been an argument and the injured party was struck on the face by the defendant.

There was bruising and swelling to the victim’s face.

Savage told police: “Yes I did smack her and that’s the truth.” CCTV footage confirmed the incident and when she was later interviewed Savage made a full and frank admission.

A barrister representing the defendant said she had no previous record and handed in a reference concerning her standing in the community.

He explained that he injured party had made an unsavoury comment in relation to the defendant’s mother.

What happened was her reaction to that incitement.
