Sinn Féin welcomes series of events to commemmorate George '˜AE' Russell

A series of events to mark the 150th Anniversary of George '˜AE' Russell has been welcomed.

Sinn Féin Councillor, Liam Mackle, welcomed the decision by council to run the events to mark the 150th Anniversary of one of Lurgan’s most distinguished sons.

Speaking following an event on Friday night he said: “I was delighted to attend the opening of a landmark exhibition of paintings and other memorabilia by George Russell (AE) in the Armagh County Museum.

“The exhibition is open until April 22nd and I would encourage as many people as possible to go and see the paintings.

“George Russell was born in William Street in April 1867.

“He was a prolific painter, writer and thinker. Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council have organised a whole series of events to mark this important anniversary including lectures in Brownlow House and a walking tour of sites associated with Russell hosted by local historian Jim Conway (8th April).”
