Paul Rooney, Lighthouse Road, Ballyward, was fined £200 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates court for driving with excess alcohol in breath on April 15 this year.

He was also banned from driving for 12 months but this would be reduced to nine if he completes a course for drink driving.

The court heard he was stopped on the Dromara Road, Leitrim, at 10.48pm and he failed a preliminary breath test.

An evidential test gave a reading of 76.

A barrister representing Rooney said he had been at home during the course of the day and in that time had taken a few tins of beer.

He added that the defendant got a call from his daughter to ask him to collect her and he genuinely believed he was able to drive.

Rooney was stopped at a routine checkpoint and was shocked at being over the limit, said the lawyer.
