The Club, along with a number of other local groups, had been forced to leave its long-time base during recent refurbishment work at the Downshire Road premises.

But now they have been told by the new Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council that they can move back.

The members and officers of the Banbridge Senior Citizens Club have expressed their delight at the decision to allow them to return unhindered to their room at the Old Technical School in the town.

They have also praised the actions and efforts of local MLA Jo-Anne Dobson who the Club called upon to work and lobby on their behalf to ensure a smooth transition back into the building which is currently being refurbished by the Council.

Commenting after being invited to meet with the members at their temporary location, the Pavilion at the King George V Playing Fields, Mrs Dobson said: “I am absolutely delighted that very soon the members of the Senior Citizens Club, which has a proud and long history in Banbridge, will be returning to their home at the Old Technical Building on the Downshire Road.

“At the beginning of this year the Club were moved from their weekly meeting place of more than 50 years to enable ‘essential health and safety work’ to be conducted at the building by the Council.

“It has been a privilege to work alongside the officers of the club during this time to ensure a smooth transition for them to return to the building.

“The Club are a force for good for the Senior Citizens of the town and I know just how much time and effort the officers put in to providing a varied, interesting and stimulating program for their members throughout the year.

“They have my full and consistent support as they look to the future and I look forward to joining them once again when they return to the Old Technical Building.”

No-one from ABC Council was available for comment on the matter at time of going to press.
