Scrummy stew from rugby club warms community in Glynn

The Glynn men saw to it that no one went hungry after villagers had gone nearly two days with out electricity supply.

The lights went out last Thursday night (March 21) and on Saturday morning (March 23), with the outage continuing, Larne RFC’s Colin Adair got a phone call from Stephen Henry, who had the responsibility for feeding all the players that day.

However, all games had been called off and Stephen decided that as the food had already been ordered in and was ready to cook, it should not go to waste.

“Stephen thought that he would make a big pot of stew for all the residents who needed something to eat,” explained Colin, who is also a member of Glynn Community Group. “So the plan was put into action by the community group. Paul Montgomery (rugby club president) came out and opened up, allowing Stephen to start preparing, and a heater was also installed by local residents Scott Nelson and Tam Johnston.”

When the stew was ready John Swan, Joyce Nelson and Alison Swan set off to visit between 30-40 elderly residents with food in hand.

Colin said: “After lunch, Stephen and Robert Tweed started to make a curry for dinner and there were also burgers for the kids.”

He added: “I would just like to say that the electricity may have been off, but my faith in people’s kindness was restored. It’s a credit to the residents in Glynn, where community matters, and boy did they show it.

“Thanks to everyone who played a part on Saturday and thanks to Larne Rugby Club for letting residents use their facilities.”
