Road signs in Banbridge are too 'confusing'

CONFUSING roads signs in Banbridge need to be up-dated to make the town more "welcoming" for visitors, it was claimed at the council's monthly meeting last Monday night.

Councillor John Hanna raised the subject of “inadequate signage”, particularly in the region of Church Square, where he said an “enormous sign” directed traffic to Newry through the town centre, causing more congestion.

“This is only one example of how the signs haven’t kept up with the roads network and it would be far better to direct traffic out to Dromore Road where the new roundabout is located, rather than have motorists driving through the town,” he said. “I think it is timely to ask Roads Service to a meeting after they have carried out a review of the current signage around Banbridge.

“Local residents know where to go, but we are trying to attract visitors and proper signage is very important.”

Mr Hanna said on matters of road safety, he believed poor road signs contributed to accidents in that drivers were having to slow down and stop because they didn’t know what turn to take next.

Drivers are having to stop to see where they are going and I think we should be asking Roads Service to look at all road signage in the area which would help make the town more welcoming for people,” added Mr Hanna.

Council chief executive, Mr Liam Hannaway, said the Roads Service were due to meet the council in May and the issue of signage could be raised then.
